The Creston and District Society for Community Living (CDSCL) was formed
in 1997. On April 01, 1998, CDSCL took over the diversified services
formerly provided by the Endicott Centre.
CDSCL Programs
CDSCL is a non-profit charitable organization that provides support for
individuals with disabilities in the Creston Valley under four programs
with an emphasis on community inclusion. All programs have received full
accreditation as community social service provider under the Commission
on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Community Housing
CDSCL owns five homes in which sixteen individuals with developmental
disabilities receive 24-support and four receive partial residential
support. Two of these homes are partially funded by BC Housing and are
fully wheelchair accessible as individuals living there also have
physical disabilities. CDSCL employees provide daily care, training in
life skills and assist with community access.
Supported Living
CDSCL also provides staffing support to a number of individuals
with developmental disabilities who live in rental homes or apartments
in the Creston community. The level of care provided is relative to the
individuals’ capabilities and skills and includes training in Daily
Living Skills and personal care. These individuals attend the various
Day Programs available in the community and access generic community
resources.
Community Integration
CDSCL operates several Day Programs out of two locations in Creston.
125 8th Avenue South
The Yard Maintenance Crew provides a variety of services such as snow
clearing, leaf raking, grass cutting, yard cleanup & hauling and shrub
pruning.
Our “Clear Blue Recycling Program” provides
curbside recycling pick-up twice per month for residences and
businesses.
The Maintenance Program helps with maintenance for Society homes as well
as services such as residential relocation and vehicle cleaning,
maintenance and inspections.
CDSCL also operates a Woodshop at this
location that provides opportunities and training for individuals with
developmental disabilities in a vocational setting. Participants in this
program construct and/or finish wood products such as stakes, planters,
picnic tables, and fencing. These items are for sale to the Community.
The CDSCL Woodshop provides products to large agencies such as the
Ministry of Highways and was a major supplier of stakes to the BC Gas
Pipeline Project. The Woodshop is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 3:00
pm.
For more information on the programs at this site, call Vicky Wayling or
Paul Bourgeois at 428-7467.
223 10th Avenue
North
At the 10th Avenue Day Program, individuals
help with paper shredding for the Administration office and engage in
recreational and social activities. They learn skills in music, food
preparation and arts and crafts. Weekly social activities include
singing, a hot lunch, and movie day. For further information phone
428-9545.
Two participants of the Day Programs also volunteer to help with the
“Meals on Wheels” program.
Therapeutic Riding Program
New to CDSCL in 2005, the Therapeutic Riding Program
uses horses and horse-oriented activities to provide therapy to people
with developmental, physical and emotional disabilities. Therapeutic
Riding is used world-wide not only to provide therapy, but also
exercise, recreation and a sense of freedom and achievement that is
often missing in the lives of people with disabilities. Eight and ten
week sessions are offered in the spring, fall and winter, as well as
weeklong summer camps. For more information, contact Sarah Schmidt at the
CDSCL Office: 428-9646.
Seniors Housing
In addition to its accredited programs, CDSCL
owns and operates Rebekah Manor, a 26-unit subsidized seniors apartment
building.
Employees
CDSCL employees are fully trained to provide quality care to the
individuals they support. CDSCL employs approximately sixty employees
who are members of CUPE Local 4775. These employees work directly with
the individuals supported by CDSCL and include supervisory staff.
Non-union employees include the Executive Director, the Payroll &
Benefits Administrator, a Receptionist/Office Clerk and the Therapeutic
Riding Program Director.
Volunteers
Volunteers play a key role in providing vital services to individuals
with disabilities. Volunteers are especially important to the
Therapeutic Riding, Woodshop and Recycling Programs.
Placements
Aside from the Therapeutic Riding Program, Individuals are referred for
services provided by CDSCL by Community Living BC, which provides the
majority of the funding for the Society. Individuals and their families
can also apply directly to CDSCL.
Management
The Creston And District Society for Community Living is governed by a
volunteer Board of Directors. Services to people with developmental
disabilities are managed by a Management Team
consisting of the Executive Director and four Program Coordinators.
The CDSCL Administration Office is located at 223 10th Avenue North and
is open Mondays to Fridays 8:00 am to Noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
